How to use an Alt code
- Make sure Num Lock is on.
- Hold down Alt.
- Type the number on the numeric keypad (the number keys above the letters don't work).
- Release Alt: the symbol appears.
With or without the zero
The two lists are different character sets. Without a leading zero (Alt+130), Windows uses the old “OEM” code page, which on US computers is code page 437, the character set of the original IBM PC. With the zero (Alt+0233), it uses the Windows code page of your keyboard language: Windows-1252 for English and other Western European languages. That's why é is both Alt+130 and Alt+0233.
No numeric keypad?
Many laptops don't have one. Press Windows + . (period) to open the emoji panel and pick the symbol from its Symbols tab, or copy it from this page.
Codes above 255
Alt codes were made for 256 characters. On the original IBM PC, a bigger number wrapped around to the same result as that number minus 256; some programs, like WordPad, turn numbers from 256 to 65,535 into the matching Unicode character instead. Don't count on it: for anything outside these lists, copy and paste.
Frequently asked questions
What is Alt+1?
☺ (WHITE SMILING FACE). Alt+2 gives ☻ and Alt+3 gives ♥.
What is the Alt code for the degree symbol?
Alt+0176 or Alt+248 gives °.
Why doesn't my Alt code work?
Check that Num Lock is on and that you're using the numeric keypad, not the number row. Some apps ignore Alt codes; in that case copy the symbol from this page.
Do Alt codes work on a Mac?
No. On a Mac, open the Character Viewer with Fn/Globe + E and search for the symbol by name.
What are the Alt codes for Spanish and French accents?
They're in the table below: for example ñ is Alt+0241 or Alt+164 and é is Alt+0233 or Alt+130.
