What counts as a special character
Anything that isn't a plain letter or digit: punctuation, symbols, and letters with accents. The 32 symbol keys of a keyboard are special characters too; their names are on the keyboard symbols page.
How to type special characters
- Windows: hold Alt and type the code on the numeric keypad (see the table, or the full list of Alt codes), or press Windows + . and open the Symbols tab.
- Mac: press Fn/Globe + E to open the Character Viewer and search by name; for accents, press and hold the letter.
- Phone: touch and hold a letter for its accents, or copy the character from this page.
