How to type symbols without copying

On Windows, press Windows + . (period) while typing and open the Symbols tab of the emoji panel. Symbols that have a Windows Alt code are listed in the table: hold Alt and type the number on the numeric keypad.

On a Mac, press Fn/Globe + E (or choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols) to open the Character Viewer, and search for the symbol's name.

On a phone, the quickest way is to copy it from this page.

Text symbols or emoji?

Some symbols exist as both plain text and emoji. ❤ (U+2764) can be drawn as a plain heart in the color of your text or as a full-color emoji. An invisible character right after it decides which: ️ (U+FE0F VARIATION SELECTOR-16) asks for the emoji look and ︎ (U+FE0E VARIATION SELECTOR-15) for the text look. That's why the same heart can look different from one app to another.

Where these symbols come from

Every symbol here is a standard Unicode character, the same as letters and digits, so it pastes into any app. Hover over a symbol (or long-press it) to see its official name and code point. Most of them have been in Unicode since its early versions: ♥ and ★ since Unicode 1.1 (1993).

Frequently asked questions

How do I copy several symbols at once?

Tap each one: every symbol you tap is copied and also added to the box at the top. When you have them all, press Copy all.

Why does a symbol show as a box?

Your device has no font with that character. Older phones are missing some of the newer symbols; the classic ones on this page work almost everywhere.

Are these symbols free to use?

Yes. They're standard Unicode characters, like letters, so you can use them anywhere you can type text.
