How kaomoji cry
Kaomoji draw tears with characters that look like streams running down: ╥ (U+2565 BOX DRAWINGS DOWN DOUBLE AND HORIZONTAL SINGLE) in (╥﹏╥), the Kannada letter ಥ (U+0CA5 KANNADA LETTER THA) in (ಥ﹏ಥ), or a plain T in (T_T). The wavy mouth is ﹏ (U+FE4F WAVY LOW LINE).
Why some kaomoji show boxes
Kaomoji borrow characters from many writing systems, and some collections online use characters added to Unicode only recently, which older phones and computers can't draw. Every kaomoji here uses characters that have been in Unicode since 2010 or earlier, checked one by one, and none uses letters written right to left, which can scramble a face.
