Black and white shapes
In Unicode names, “black” means filled and “white” means outline: ■ (U+25A0 BLACK SQUARE) and □ (U+25A1 WHITE SQUARE), ● (U+25CF BLACK CIRCLE) and ○ (U+25CB WHITE CIRCLE). Some of them have emoji versions too, so the text ones carry an invisible selector that asks for the plain look.
Looking for the “square” of a number?
Squared is ² (U+00B2 SUPERSCRIPT TWO) (Alt+0178 or Alt+253), and the square root sign is √ (U+221A SQUARE ROOT) (Alt+251). See the math symbols for more.
Blocks and box drawing
The last two groups are for drawing with text: shades and solid blocks (█ (U+2588 FULL BLOCK)) and every line and corner of the Box Drawing block, which has been in Unicode since Unicode 1.1 (1993).
