Where the peace symbol comes from
The British artist Gerald Holtom designed it in 1958 for the campaign for nuclear disarmament; it became the logo of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). It combines the flag-semaphore signals for the letters N and D, for “nuclear disarmament”, inside a circle.
