Lookalikes to avoid
Used as a face, but really a letter:
| Character | Unicode name | Code point | What it is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| ツ | KATAKANA LETTER TU | U+30C4 | KATAKANA LETTER TU, a Japanese letter that people use as a face, as in the shrug ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. |
Why Alt+1 types a smiley
☺ and ☻ were the first two pictures of code page 437, the character set of the original IBM PC, so Windows still types them with Alt+1 and Alt+2. Unicode's notes give ☺ the nickname “have a nice day!”.
Text smiley or emoji?
☺ on its own is a text character; with an invisible selector after it, ☺️, phones draw the color emoji called “smiling face”. For more faces made of characters, see the kaomoji.
