Picture to ASCII art

Pick a picture: it's turned into characters right here, in your browser. It's never uploaded.

Paste it where letters line up

ASCII art only lines up in a monospaced font, where every character is the same width. In WhatsApp, put three backticks (```) on each side of it to switch to monospace. In apps that use a proportional font, the shape will look stretched.

How the picture converter works

It shrinks your picture to the width you choose, measures how bright each spot is and swaps it for a character: dense ones like @ and % for dark areas, light ones like . and : for bright areas. Rows are halved because a character is about twice as tall as it is wide. The picture never leaves your browser.

About the big letters

They're drawn with a five-line font made for this site: letters A to Z, digits and common punctuation, plus a heart (♥). Letters with accents use their plain letter.
