How Roman numerals work

Seven letters stand for the values in the first table: I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1,000. You add them from left to right, largest first: MDCLXVI = 1,666.

When a smaller numeral comes before a larger one, it is subtracted. In the standard form that happens only in six pairs: IV (4), IX (9), XL (40), XC (90), CD (400) and CM (900). So 1994 is M + CM + XC + IV = MCMXCIV.

The largest number and zero

With these rules the largest number you can write is 3,999, MMMCMXCIX, so the converter stops there. There is no Roman numeral for zero: the Romans had none. Medieval writers used the word nulla (“none”), and some used the letter N.

Roman numeral characters in Unicode

Unicode has special characters for Roman numerals (Ⅰ, Ⅳ, Ⅻ, Ⅿ) in its Number Forms block, but only for compatibility with older character sets: for most purposes, Unicode recommends writing Roman numerals with ordinary Latin letters, as the first line of the converter does. The third line uses the special characters, for when you want them to look and behave as numerals.
