What π stands for
π is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter: 3.14159265358979… It never ends and never repeats.
A short history
The first known use of the Greek letter π for this ratio is by the Welsh mathematician William Jones, in his 1706 book Synopsis Palmariorum Matheseos. Leonhard Euler made it popular in works he published in 1736 and 1748.
Pi Day
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 (3/14), because 3, 1 and 4 are the first digits of π. Larry Shaw started it in 1988 at the Exploratorium, a science museum in San Francisco, and in 2009 the US House of Representatives supported it.
