What's in this group
Unicode puts 270 emoji in the Flags group, in 3 subgroups, shown here in Unicode's own order. The oldest date from 2010; the newest here, 🇨🇶 (flag: Sark), was added in 2024.
How flag emoji work
Each country flag is a pair of special letters called regional indicators, one for each letter of the country's code: 🇪🇸 is the pair for ES.
Some browsers on Windows show those two letters instead of the flag: in our tests on Windows 11, Chrome's engine showed the letters and Firefox showed the flag.
How to type emoji
- On Windows, press Windows + . (period) while typing to open the emoji panel, and search for the emoji by name.
- On a Mac, press Fn/Globe + E (or choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols) to open the Character Viewer, which has a search box.
- On a phone, the quickest way is to copy it from this page.
Why an emoji shows as a box
Every year Unicode adds new emoji, and phones and computers that haven't been updated don't have them yet, so they show an empty box instead. The name of each emoji here ends with the year it was added.
This site lists everything up to Emoji 17.0 (September 2025). The emoji of Emoji 18.0 aren't included yet: none of the browsers we test with can draw them.
